The Life in Flex trend — blurring the lines between work and play.[November 2017]
Gone are the hard lines between the home and office. Color, design and texture must be comfortable and welcoming no matter where we are or what we’re doing. This reshaping of our traditional understanding of space and function we call Life in Flex.
If the old saying was "work hard, play hard," the mantra of now is "play is work, work is play." Thanks to new, evolving technology, it's never been easier to go untethered, and as a result, younger generations don't compartmentalize their lives the way previous generations did. Work is no longer 9 to 5. Play is no longer reserved for weekends.
This new, more flexible lifestyle is accompanied by a change in the way we think about color in a professional setting. The comforts of home — be it a more casual styled couch or colors typically reserved for home interiors — are migrating into the workplace. Color feeds creativity and the colors of home are bringing new life to the office.
A passion for choice is key in this new flexible world. The power of personalization extends beyond choosing where to work and when. It influences lifestyle and purchasing decisions too. Today's consumers won't change their needs to fit a product; instead, they'll find a product they can mold to fit their lifestyle.
In our next post we'll discuss the color, material and texture implications of the Life in Flex trend as they relate to building and architectural design. As part of this series, we’ll take a look at other trends Valspar has identified that will influence the look and design of buildings to come. We'll also share with you some case studies where you can see these trends come to life.
